I used some of my old drawings from many months ago, so I could do some modifications for the convention. I was particulary proud of those two, so, I thought why not?
Coloring doesn’t really have a rule book/standard, so this tip(ish) talks mostly in a old fashioned painting way.
So though I use skin as an example, it is really hard to have a object with a single hue in all basic color/lighting/reflection no matter the texture, and is also really easy to make the color dirty.
And since I think there’s a LOT tutorial out there talking about shadowing so I will skip this part, but another thing I want to talk is reflection’s color.
It is a part that matters a lot, it could easily make your art looks heavy/light even if you put only a little color in it, and while I think it is okay to use B/W(as shadow/reflections) in full colored art, but since the pure white/black color stayed in gray scale instead of any hue, it would again let the canvas looks dirty/a little bit messy if you didn’t control it well.
and hey since we’re talking about digital painting we dont have to do everything by ourselves, color balance, layer modes, gradient maps can help you spent less time on doing basic jobs like repaint/ deciding colors.
Last thing about painting/coloring, though I think color palette out there could be helpful, I think changing/balancing the color before you put all those into gradient map is important bc color palette I saw are normally with a really really high Chroma, which is mostly good for web design, but not certainly in a painting in my own opinion,
so try every tool every color out there, but add in your own thought instead of fully borrowing from people’s reference :)))
